I hardly look at what last.fm is recording as far as the music I play, but the other day I took a peek at my top 10 and found it pretty interesting. My favorite bands, according to last.fm:
1 The Fall 545
2 Os Mutantes 350
3 Rudimentary Peni 292
4 Brainbombs 287
5 Devo 270
6 Public Image Ltd. 250
7 Cravats 220
8 Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft 211
9 Cabaret Voltaire 174
10 Caroliner 144
The three-digit number is the number of plays that last.fm has recorded and the one digit number is the overall rank. To give you an idea of the sample size, I’ve had an account for little over a year. I’d say the top 5 are pretty damn accurate, if a little skewed due to Brainbombs and Os Mutantes obsessions that took place immediately after I started using last.fm. But hell, it’s a good group, even if it is a little scary to see the Fall dominate the list so soundly.
I have more issues with the bottom 5. As much as I love PiL, I don’t know if I really like them more than some bands that didn’t even crack the top 10 (the Birthday Party, who I probably listened to daily for a good two years, come in at a sad 12th, after an inexplicable Fred Lane at 11th.) The high Cravats number is due to a mini-obsession. I think if I were to make a list of my favorite bands by hand they wouldn’t even rank in the top 20. Sure, I like them — I just like about 20 other bands more.
Sue me, I do listen to an awful lot of DAF. What can I say? Homoerotically charged German industrial music gets me all hot and bothered. While the raw digits are there, I can’t say I really like DAF more than Cabaret Voltaire, who I probably would have pegged above even Devo.
Caroliner’s ranking is due entirely to the fact that I’ve listened to every track on every Caroliner album I have about once each. And they have a lot of albums. Obviously it’s not like I don’t like the band — it’s more like I mainly listened to music on the computer over the last six months while I was doing math homework, and having my brain firmly melted while trying to figure out polynomial whatzits is not exactly helpful. I definitely wouldn’t put Caroliner in my top 10 bands if I were to make a list by hand, but I guess they put themselves there by sheer bulk.
What do I see in the future? Well, I hardly listen to Os Mutantes anymore, while listening to “Cacophony” just two times will boost Rudimentary Peni up to where it belongs in my list, closer to co-favorites with the Fall (who aren’t going anywhere any time soon.) I expect Brainbombs and PiL to drop and the Birthday Party to crack the top 10. And maybe Cabaret Voltaire will get a more respectable placement. I think I’ll do some listening and check back in with my stats in a couple months.
