1 September 2004

As I'm sure you already know, on July 23rd 2004, I managed to break both my legs coming down from a 6-foot high wall. I don't know how either. I fractured my left tibia and fibula and shattered my right heelbone. I was in the hospital for nearly a week, and had a rod put in my left leg and had my heelbone surgically put back together. As of now (September 1) I'm still not able to stand or walk at all, but working on using crutches since I can put weight on my left leg again. I don't have solid casts on either leg anymore -- the left has a small removable air splint and the right has a "bivalve" cast -- basically a normal cast cut in two and held together with an Ace bandage.

Some photos are already up on the web -- the x-rays taken in the ER the night I broke my legs are here, and some pictures of me with Ryan (of Thursday Club) and Leia (who is cool and has a hot dog costume) are here. Below are some other photos. Warning: not for people squeamish about surgical wounds or leg hair.

Me on August 7th, 2004, between the surgery on my right leg and getting recasted (hence the giant bandagey-ness). The dark line on my left knee is the scar from where they inserted the rod.

I tried to take a picture of my leghair once I had both the casts off (August 26), but the actual leghair was too faint. It was straight and light brown and there was five weeks worth of it. But then I shaved it off. You'll just have to take my word for it. At least the scar on my left knee turned out good in this one. That Madonna-circa-1983 white fishnet thing is to hold a cotton pad over my huge incision (see below).

I told you it was gross. This picture is from August 17, when they first took the cast back off my right leg after the surgery, so that I could wash the wound so it would actually heal. As of now (September 1) it looks a hell of a lot better than in this picture, and I don't have sutures in it any more, but hey, I like grossing people out. When I first saw it I said "AAAHHH Blechh!!".
